Currency Converter Update

Some of you might have noticed that recently our Currency Conversion module for Vik Booking and Vik Rent Car has stopped working. This is because the services of Yahoo Finance and Fixer have been suddenly shut down one after another, by making their API no longer accessible. We have introduced (June 11th 2018) a new way for reading the exchange rates from the European Central Bank. To add this patch, you will need to manually force the component you are using to re-copy the core files.

Some of you might have noticed that recently our Currency Conversion module for VikBooking and VikRentCar has stopped working. This is because Yahoo Finance has suddenly shut down their Currency Conversion APIs, so our conversion calls couldn’t be completed successfully. We have fixed this issue, by adding a new conversion service (Fixer.io) to our Currency Conversion module ** Fixer has been dismissed too, we now use the official service of the European Central Bank. To add this patch, you will need to manually force the component you are using to re-copy the core files. This will only be possible if you are using the latest version of VikBooking or VikRentCar, and if you have installed and published our VikUpdater plugin. In case you don't have the VikUpdater plugin on your website, you can find it in our Free Area section.

** UPDATE JUNE 11TH 2018

Both services of Yahoo Finance and Fixer are no longer working. We have dismissed the use of their APIs and we have introduced a more reliable way for reading the exchange rates between the currencies. Thanks to the European Central Bank service, you can now have daily updated exchange rates for over 30 currencies.

You can manually force the copy of the core files by following the instructions below, this will replace all the patched files to fix the issue:

1. Open your website’s administrator section (<yourwebsite>/administrator/index.php).
2. Add the following suffix to your current URL: ‘?option=com_vikbooking&task=updateprogram’ (Change ‘com_vikbooking’ to ‘com_vikrentcar’ if you are using VikRentCar).
3. Launch the URL.
4. Click on the ‘Download & Re-Install’ button.

After following this procedure, the Currency Conversion library will be updated, and your module will be working properly again.

The currencies supported by the European Central Bank are the followings:
EUR, USD, JPY, BGN, CZK, DKK, GBP, HUF, PLN, RON, SEK, CHF, ISK, NOK, HRK, RUB, TRY, AUD, BRL, CAD, CNY, HKD, IDR, ILS, INR, KRW, MXN, MYR, NZD, PHP, SGD, THB, ZAR

WARNING: If you have made any modifications to the core component files (by not using Overrides), this action will delete them, so make sure you create a back up for those modifications and add them back into the component after the process has finished.
